I am sorry that I am unable to be with you on this joyful occasion of the official opening of the Kwame Nkrumah market.
The amenities provided in this fine market will, I know, benefit greatly the people of Kumasi — sellers and buyers alike — and contribute to the economic development of this city. The construction of this market is another example of the positive and imaginative manner in which the Chairman and Councillors of the Kumasi City Council are discharging their duties towards the people of Kumasi, and their determination to provide you with all modern amenities which are essential for your happiness and well-being.
I take the opportunity, therefore to convey to all those connected with the building of the market, my warm congratulations for their enthusiastic and untiring efforts to introduce improvements in the city of Kumasi, and to build it into a veritable Garden City.
The government is always ready to encourage and to assist local initiative and progressive ideas. I have recently directed that repayment of the loans granted by the Government to the Kumasi City Council and which the Council have spent for non-revenue earning projects in the interests of the Kumasi people should be waived. Furthermore, no interest will be charged on the remaining loans which have been used for commercial undertakings. These concessions will enable the Kumasi City Council to do more than it has done already for the people of this city.
Municipal and Local Authorities, because their work impinges so directly on the lives of the people they serve, have a significant part to play in the community development, and in our struggle to eliminate poverty, disease and illiteracy from Ghana and to raise the living standards of our people. You have a great opportunity to assist in turning our cities, towns and villages into well planned and pleasant areas of habitation.
Let all Chairmen and Councillors of City, Municipal and Local Councils, Villages and Town Committees re-dedicate themselves to their new responsibilities, and always remember their obligations to serve loyally and keep faith with the Party, the Government and the people.
