The Opening Of Electricity And Water; Supplies For Sunyani
Sunyani, March 27, 1962
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
I recall with much pleasure my last visit to Sunyani in December 1960, and the Wonderful reception which was accorded to me and my party. I am glad to be with you again, and to share with you our joy in the completion of your new Water Works and Electricity Supplies Systems.
I wish to thank you all, chiefs and people of this Region for the enthusiastic reception I received when I arrived yesterday. I was much impressed by the obvious and spontaneous expression of loyalty and confidence in myself, the Party and the Government.
Since my arrival at your regional headquarters, I have not stopped admiring the tremendous development which has taken place here since my last visit. The progress which has been made in the construction of the Sunyani Airstrip is quite significant. I have also received encouraging reports about the many self-help projects which have been completed since my last visit.
Your Region has been able to achieve much during the three years of its existence. By making such a tremendous progress within so short a time, you, the chiefs and people of this region, have demonstrated your acceptance of the challenge presented to your regional autonomy, and I am happy to say that you have justified the creation of this region.
I hope that the people of this Region will appreciate the advantages to be derived from these amenities and that they will readily pay their water-rate and electricity charges so as to help the maintenance of the machinery which will provide these amenities.
I congratulate the staff of the Water Supplies Division and the Electricity Division as well as all the other people who contributed to the construction of these projects. Nananom, Ladies and Gentlemen, I shall now turn on the fountain and switch on the light. May the water that will flow refresh and enliven all those who drink it, and may the light which will be transmitted from the Electricity power House brighten your ways and be a source of inspiration to you all in the struggle for the social and economic reconstruction of Ghana.
