Today is the 12th anniversary of our great party and it is an anniversary with a difference. This anniversary meets the party and the nation with me as general secretary 0f the party and President of the Republic.
This fact constitutes a remarkably historical landmark for our people, for it shows that, as I have often said, the party and the nation are one and the same, namely: the Convention People’s Party is Ghana and Ghana is the Convention People’s Party.
Comrades, it is needless for me to ask you, therefore, to recognize this outstanding fact: that a very grave responsibility lies on the shoulders of us all, not only as Ghanaians, but also as members of the Convention People’s Party which, no matter what may be said by our detractor, remains right in the front of the struggle for the total liberation of Africa and the union of the independent African states.
lf you cast your eyes across the continent and look to South Africa, Congo, Angola, South West Africa, Kenya, Central Africa and the other areas of our continent where colonialism still flourished, you will agree with me that our task is only just beginning. We have a duty to gird our loins, strongly to order our lives austerely, and to clench our teeth grimly, in order to enter the battlements of the enemy and smash them to pieces. This we must do at all cost, with African nationalism as the liberating sword.
In the areas where physical colonialism has been smashed, colonialism in its new subtle forms has reared its head. This new colonialism is even more dangerous, because it operates unseen; but it operates all the same most effectively, twisting independent countries around its ugly fingers by the manipulation of economic gadgets and the profession of benevolent friendship which is as hollow as any empty shell.
Comrades, the Convention People’s Party, which has weathered so much storm and which is a veteran in this field of combat, must stand by Africa day and night. We must stand in the supreme interest of our motherland and fight against these evils of imperialism, colonialism and neo-colonialism, and set an example of sacrifice, determination and courage.
We have already given ample evidence of our capacity for government and have debunked the threadbare accusation that Africans lack the ability to rule themselves. We have shown friendship to all and sundry and have made it quite clear that we do not move East or West but only forward, which means pro-Africa; but we have adhered strictly to our policy of positive neutralism and non-alignment and whatever we have done, we have always placed Africa first.
Comrades, we are intensely interested in the preservation of peace in the world, for Africa has a vested interest in peace. But we have made it abundantly clear and will not budge an inch from the position that we are unalterably opposed to all forms of imperialism, colonialism and neo-colonialism and not even the great sacrifice of life could shift us from this ground.
So on this 12th anniversary of our party, it is of the most absolute importance that, we should all rededicate ourselves to this enormous task and remember constantly that Africa can only be saved by Africans.
The Convention People’s Party must keep a keen eye on the attempts by the imperialists and colonialists to balkanize Africa. It must fight ruthlessly and relentlessly to break down all the artificial barriers which have been erected in the crisis-cross dissection not only of the land surface of Africa, but also of the material life of our people, separating father from son, brother from sister, mother from daughter with the inhuman purpose merely of extracting the wealth of Africa for the benefit of the people of other lands. We cannot — we must not allow these barriers to remain.
The trails of the future shall be even more perilous than those we have survived in the past. But inspired by the rugged and austere experience gained by the lean years of our political revolution, the Convention People’s Party must move forward to these new challenges fortified by the conviction that our cause is just and that an organized and disciplined party like ours can never stand still.
Finally, the Convention People’s Party must mobilize our total man-power for the industrial, economic, technological and scientific reconstruction of Ghana, so that we can produce the necessary conditions which shall mean an abundance of every good thing for our people and the greatest welfare for the masses.
