The Vice-President Mr. John Dramani Mahama at the weekend said the ideals and lasting legacies that Osagyefo Dr. Nkrumah stood for and bequeathed to the present generation make him unmatched in Ghana and Africa in general.
According to him, Nkrumah’s contributions throughout his lifetime to African political thought and dignity of the black man remain lasting memories and legacies.
Speaking at the launch of the centenary celebration of Dr. Nkrumah in Accra on the theme “ a life of struggle, a vision of Africa unbound”, Mr. Mahama said the formation of groups and associations which seek to perpetuate the ideologies and philosophies of the late Osagyefo speaks volumes about him as a unique individual
He said Nkrumah’s commitment to mankind was why he was rightly named Africa’s man of the millennium as well as amongst the first hundred most influential people in the world.
On concerns in some quarter as to the worthiness of the celebration, the vice-president said “Nkrumah was a son of so much worth to this country and Africa it is not only befitting to celebrate his birthday but highly justified to be celebrated with pomp pageantry.
He contended that Nkrumah that Nkrumah was not just an individual but an institution in Africa and the Diaspora who fought selfless for the emancipation and independence of Ghana and the total liberation of African continent.
Mr. Mahama said the achievements of Nkrumah runes through the length and breath of Ghana and more evident in the solid foundation in the county’s infrastructural architecture.
“The many schools, roads, ports, health facilities, a hydro power project and his vigorous industrialisation and agricultural programs formed the nucleus of a vision he had for the county”, he stated.
He said that it is even for that basis that successive governments have continued to build on the solid foundations he left.
