PAGE 16, NKRUMAH'S BIRTHDAY MUST UNITE GHANA- QUASHIEGAH

A Former Minster Of Health in the kuffour Administration, Major Courage Quarshigah, has called on Ghanaians to use the centenary celebration of the birth of Dr. Nkrumah to halt the vicious cycle of victimisation of political opponents.
He said this must give way to a situation in which we can improve our political relations with each other.
This way , he said “we will have more time to develop our minds and march Ghana forward from now on. Anything short of this would be a great dishonour to the memory of our great leader, Dr. Nkrumah .
The former minister, who was a member of the young pioneer , a youth working group that was formed during Dr. Nkrumah’s regime, said “Ghana had been marking time without any order for quick march” due to the vilifications and condemnation of predecessor governments.
He described the witch-hunting of members of previous regimes, discontinuation of projects initiated by governments, termination if contracts, mass dismissal of public servants, dissolutions of boards, probes, trials as something the “NPP did which the NDC is paying back in a worse coin.
Major Quarshigah said the coup should be behind us and should not be allowed to divide us.
After all Ghana was the loser, since that coup set us back several years. Nkrumah’s laudable projects he initiated for Ghana were condemned, some were discontinued and others were completely abandoned to detriment of Ghana, he added.
He descried the coup as the process that initiated more of the military takeovers in Ghana, none of which has brought anything better to Ghana.
Major quarshigah said the unfortunate thing, however was that the multiparty democracy the country had accepted had brought with it similar features of a military takeover anytime governments were changed through the ballot box and not by guns.
Major Quarshigah said Dr. Nkrumah was nor a saint but looking back, his good deeds far outweighed his perceived bad deeds.
Today when the whole world appreciate the idea to celebrate the founders day we simply have to forgive and forget all that some people hold against him and focus on what he stood for, “he stated.
He said he was one leader who was not afraid of the future and certainly was never a slave of the past.
President Barack Obama said these words recently almost 43years after the overthrow of president Nkrumah. Today even those who don’t believe in their hearts disagree with the idea will have no choice but loudly voice their support for it.
As a member of the young pioneer movement, I was so fond of Dr. Nkrumah particularly of the way he dressed and spoke then, and perhaps even now for the positive impact that movement made on my life . the young pioneer movement had a code of discipline some of which are still embedded in my character and very much responsible for my personal success in life.
Codes like: love for country, discipline and obedience, honesty and morality, punctuality, protection of the state property, love for work , self control, striving for faultlessness were all principles that still guide me and I wish as a nation we can still find ways of inculcating some of these invaluable principles in the youth to today in order to prepare them for the future leadership of Ghana, he said.
